Passing Through. 2004-2005. Nova color exterior acrylic and non woven media. Passing Through occupies 15,000 square feet of space throughout the city. Of that total, the centerpiece mural accounts for 5200 square feet.
Passing Through is the centerpiece mural for a citywide public art project designed by Meg Saligman. With over 200,000 viewers passing by each day, Passing Through looms over the eastbound side of the Schuylkill Expressway, serving as a gateway into Philadelphia. ”Altered signage” murals incorporate eavesdropped text (picked up while passing through) and can be found at 19 satellite locations throughout the city. All these murals are connected by the “Passing Through” logo – a rendering of an interstate highway sign – creating a veritable treasure hunt. Visitors discover their own reward.
